'Flooring debris' is not one material stream. A useful scope identifies the visible finish, attachment method, underlayment, adhesive or mortar, transitions, base, and the substrate that must remain. Start here for layered flooring, then use the carpet or tile guide when one of those materials controls the job.

A flooring plan has to identify the full assembly first; carpet and tile then follow their own handling, measurement, and disposal paths.

02 / READ THE ASSEMBLY

What the pile used to be changes what it is now.

Floating laminate or resilient plank

Planks, foam underlayment, trims, transitions, and cartons are relatively separable when adhesive and water damage are absent.

Nailed hardwood

Board length, cleats or staples, sleepers, paper, and subfloor condition affect removal, stacking, and reuse potential.

Sheet vinyl and resilient tile

Backing and mastic age matter. Do not sand, grind, or mechanically abrade unknown older products before assessment.

Layered remodel floor

New finish may sit over tile, luan, cement board, old adhesive, or another resilient layer; photographs at thresholds often reveal the true assembly.

Build a layer schedule

For each room, record finish, attachment, underlayment, substrate, intended stop layer, and whether the material is attached or already staged.

Separate long, sharp, and dense pieces

Nailed boards, rolled sheet goods, tack strips, tile rubble, and powdery adhesive debris should not be packed as one unidentified load.

Preserve what stays

Finished adjacent rooms, cabinets, door jambs, elevators, and the retained subfloor shape the carry and protection scope.

04 / SEPARATION LOGIC

Protect the useful stream before it becomes mixed debris.

Wood-based finish

Separate solid hardwood from engineered, laminate, MDF transitions, painted trim, and adhesive-covered pieces before discussing recovery.

Resilient finish

Vinyl, linoleum, rubber, and composite products are not interchangeable; product identification and local acceptance matter.

Mineral finish

Ceramic, porcelain, stone, thinset, mortar bed, and cement board belong in the tile workflow because density and silica dominate.

05 / MEASURE IT

Use the assembly’s native unit.

Measure each room's floor area, then create a line item for every layer and attachment method. Add stair treads/risers, closets, built-ins, waste, and base or transitions only when in scope.

Floor area predicts coverage, not final weight. Dense mortar, wet wood, many layers, and adhesive can make equal areas behave entirely differently.
