Plaster-and-lath debris is a layered mineral assembly, not sheet goods. Base and finish coats key through wood or metal lath, so the load combines dense fragments, sharp reinforcement, nails, trim, and high dust potential. Measure the wall or ceiling area and identify the lath type before estimating labor or weight.

Plaster requires assembly-depth, lath, historic-material, dust, and sharp-edge analysis that would be misleading on a drywall page.

Thin strips, nails, keys of plaster, base coat, and finish coat produce a mixed wood/mineral stream with many sharp projections.

Metal lath can hold large plaster sections together and creates razor-like edges; it changes both break size and container choice.

Rock lath and transitional systems

Gypsum lath or board behind plaster can resemble drywall in photographs but carries a thicker mineral finish and different demolition behavior.

Cornices, medallions, heavy ceiling sections, and overhead work require a scope beyond ordinary staged wall debris.

Describe detachment status

Material still attached overhead or keyed through lath is demolition work; a pile on the floor is a haul-off scope. Do not merge the two.

Use containers suited to sharp fines

Thin bags can fail under lath and dense fragments. State whether debris is loose, in contractor bags, or in rigid bins.

Control the route, not just the room

Stairs, narrow turns, finished floors, and occupied areas often drive plaster labor more than the straight-line distance to the truck.

Protect the useful stream before it becomes mixed debris.

Metal lath is not clean scrap by default

Plaster bonded through the mesh can make separation labor-intensive and can affect recycler acceptance.

Wood lath is not clean lumber

Paint, nails, plaster keys, and age mean it should not be represented as reusable or recyclable wood without inspection.

Keep suspect material isolated

Do not blend unknown texture, insulation, pipe wrap, or resilient layers into ordinary plaster debris while testing or clearance is unresolved.

Use the assembly’s native unit.

Start with square feet of assembly removed, then record average plaster thickness, lath type, ceiling versus wall, and the amount already reduced to fines.
