WHY THIS CHANGES THE JOB

The material changes weight, labor, and the removal path.

Concrete is weight-governed. Start with the original length, width, and thickness of the slab or element; normal-weight concrete is commonly about 145–150 pounds per cubic foot before demolition creates voids. Then identify rebar or mesh, soil and coating contamination, piece size, and whether equipment can reach the load.

Concrete has reliable solid-volume math, extreme payload implications, reinforcement, breaking-size, silica, and clean-aggregate recovery questions that differ from brick and block.

Flatwork

Driveways, patios, walks, and slabs should be measured by area and average thickness, including thickened edges when known.

Footings and grade beams

Irregular below-grade sections are easy to underestimate; dimensions, soil adhesion, and reinforcement need separate notes.

Reinforced concrete

Rebar and welded wire change breaking, protrusion, loading, and recycler preparation even when the mineral weight is similar.

Precast and oversized pieces

Steps, curbs, lintels, and panels may require lifting or further processing. Haul-off does not automatically include breaking or rigging.

Set a maximum piece size

A pile can be technically detached yet still contain sections too large for safe manual or available equipment loading.

Verify machine access

Gate width, overhead clearance, pavement capacity, slope, landscaping, and the distance between pile and truck control the practical method.

Protect against protruding steel

Rebar tails and wire mesh require visible staging and can change transport preparation; never hide them inside a mixed pile.

04 / SEPARATION LOGIC

Protect the useful stream before it becomes mixed debris.

Clean concrete

Generally means mineral material separated from trash, drywall, wood, soil, liquids, and unknown coatings—but each receiver defines acceptance.

Concrete with rebar

May remain recoverable where processors can remove metal, but piece size and exposed steel limits must be confirmed.

Painted or coated concrete

Age and coating history can trigger sampling or rejection. Do not label it clean solely because the base is concrete.

05 / MEASURE IT

Use the assembly’s native unit.

For a rectangular slab, multiply length × width × thickness in feet, then apply a normal-weight range. Use the dedicated calculator to show the math before adding a demolition-void or equipment assumption.

The calculator estimates the original solid concrete, not the number of legal or safe vehicle loads. Actual density, reinforcement, attached soil, scale weight, vehicle rating, and local transport rules govern.

Recovery is a verified route, not a marketing adjective.

Clean aggregate recovery

Separated concrete may be crushed for aggregate where local processors accept the material and piece/rebar limits are met.

PATH 2

Mixed C&D processing

Concrete blended with remodeling waste loses the simplicity of a clean heavy-material route and can change both rate and documentation.

PATH 3

Special review

Industrial slabs, tanks, unknown coatings, contaminated sites, and post-tensioned systems require qualified review before ordinary removal.
